-BRIEF HISTORICAL REVIEW OF THE WINERY
Apostoli Estate is a family-run winery-distillery located in the village of Ampeloi Serres, 15 kilometers southwest of the “town of Gerakina” in an area with 3000 acres of vineyards. Since 2004, the winery has been combining modern technology with traditional organic cultivation, while it has also received a good practice award from the European Observatory, cultivating both international and Greek varieties located in privately owned vineyards of 65 acres.
At the winery, the consumer enjoys wines with high international certification for quality (ISO 2020) and for their healthy production conditions, while the company’s practice has so far proven that the consistent quality of the product is not going to be sacrificed on the altar of competitiveness and profit.
– THE WINES
Taking advantage of the ideal climatic conditions and based on the findings of the soil investigations we carried out in 2003, we concluded that the refined red French varieties could be grown on our estates. For this reason, we decided to source hybrid climates imported from France and plant new vineyards in 2003.
For red wines, the red varieties we use are: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. For the same reasons, we also grow the white French varieties Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. However, wanting to preserve and promote the Greek varieties, we added for our white wines Moschato of Alexandria, Moschato of Samos as well as Malagouzia, known for their strong aromas.
– THE VINEYARD
A vineyard from 479 BC
The estate owns 65 acres of vineyards, which are scattered at a distance of 1 kilometer from the winery and on the slopes of Mount Vertikos at an altitude of 50 to 150 m. All the vineyards are dry with an average yield per hectare, 500 kg per hectare. white and 600 kg of red. The soil is sandy and clayey, rich in trace elements and components for the cultivation of the vine.
The wines belong to the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) zone of Serres. The winery from 2004 until today has faithfully followed the rules of organic cultivation with respect for the environment and the consumer. It has been certified since its foundation and until today by the organic cultivation certification organization D.H.O., which is one of the most notable and reliable European certification organizations.
The winery, in addition to the certification of the vines, proceeded to the certification of both the winery and the Distillery for the entire stage of the production process up to the final bottling. As far as tsipouro is concerned, it is the first to receive approval for the production and bottling of organic tsipouro in Greece.
CLIMATE:
The climate is characterized as Mediterranean with increased rainfall, harsher winters and a short growing season for the vineyards located at the foot of the mountain and south. The average monthly temperature drops below 15 degrees Celsius from October and rises again in May. Coldest months are January and February where early and late frosts are observed.
NATURAL ENVIRONMENT:
Alexander the Great, when he was king of Visaltia with ancient Vergi as his seat, had developed wine growing in the wider area as early as 479 BC. Ancient Visaltia belonged to the area of ancient Macedonia, between Mount Vertiscos which was its western border, and Strymonas and Lake Kerkiniti, which was the eastern. That is, it is located in the geographical area that today includes the area of Nigrita and Lake Kerkini. The Visaltes were an ancient people of eastern Macedonia, who lived to the west of the river Strymons and used a lot of wine which was the sacred drink of the god Dionysus. In the center of this area, our vineyards are located and in honor of the history of Visalti our first wine was named Visaltikos
